Stockholm was established in the 13th century by a Viking chief named Birger Jarl. The city has a unique blend of the old and new and this is what draws the tourists in every year. An estimated 17 million people visited the city in 2005.

What to do in Stockholm


Visitors can go to Sandhamn, a popular destination for tourists and sailors. They can relax and have fun in the island's many spas and resorts. From the city, it only takes a 90-minute ferry ride to reach it.

Tourist Attractions


To get a true taste of Stockholm, visitors are encouraged to walk through the Gamla Stan or Old City where popular attractions such as the Museum of Medieval Stockholm and the Parliament are located. The Royal Palace, where the Swedish Royal Family lives to this day, is also located in the Gamla Stan.

Visitors can also take a tour at the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts. It is one of Europe's most extensive museums with over 18,000 pieces that trace the progression of art from the Romantic to Postmodern period.


Visiting Sigtuna - arguably Sweden's oldest surviving town and ruins -is a pleasant day trip from Stockholm. Nynäshamn is a spa town fishing village with excellent Folklore Museum, which is another good destination for an excursion out of the city.

Kungliga Slottet is the chief historical attraction in the city and the world's largest castle still in use. It has more than 600 rooms, and dates from the late 17th century. Inside the Museum Tre Kronor you'll see remains of the original 13th century castle. The town hall (Stadshuset) is another impressive and important building in the city. History is well preserved at the remarkable Skansen open-air museum atop a hill in Djurgården.
